Podiatry & Chiropody, Rachel Ciantar

Rachel has worked in private practice initially focused on serving patient needs in their own homes but has recently expanded her services working in three clinics including Heal to Toe.

Rachel caters for primary foot care, diabetic patient care, verruca treatment by cryo freezing and a biomechanical service. Rachel works closely with associated professionals including Chiropractors, Sports Therapists and Physiotherapists, providing the best treatment regime possible for patients.

Rachel provides a biomechanics service (the study of the body in motion) specifically looking at foot and ankle problems, where necessary diagnostic ultra sound scans and video gait analysis is
used to develop the best treatment regime for the patents condition.

A Verruca is a virus belonging to the group of viruses called Human Papilloma. Completely eradicating a viral infection is difficult. One method of increasing the chances of complete removal rests on triggering an immune response in the body. There are two ways of doing this, one using salicylic acid and the other using cryosurgery.

Cryosurgery is increasingly becoming the favoured option because of better results in most patients. The technique involves creating an immune response by freezing the Verruca to. Temperature of -89┬║C.  This treatment has an average success rate of 75%.  Cryosurgery is possible with most patients but there are exceptions to this. In some instances Cryosurgery is not possible.

Cryosurgery treatment requires the following to be adhered to:

  1. Following the first treatment, the dressing needs to be kept on for a full 24 hours.
  2. The treated area will present some pain, specifically at the frozen site.
  3. Sometimes a blister may form at the treated area.
  4. In some cases patients might need recourse to their preferred pain killers.
  5. A maximum of five freeze sessions are available to attempt complete Verruca treatment. If the Verruca has not been removed in five freeze session or less then it is not possible to continue with cryosurgery.

Cryosurgery cannot be guaranteed to work for all patients.
